| The CBNRM Project
has entered a second phase with a newer and different thrust. The
overall objective of the programme remains basically to contribute
to poverty reduction and enhancement of sustainable rural livelihoods
in Southern Africa. The second phase will however aim to do so by
promoting a deeper understanding of how natural resources can be used
and managed sustainably, and advocating a people-centred approach
to development and biodiversity conservation. Relevant units of analysis
and targeted policy arenas will range from the local to the intermediate
to the global, and include relationships between actors and institutions
operating at different scales.
The programme will have the specific objectives of:
- enhancing understanding of the opportunities for and constraints
on people-centred approaches to sustainable natural resource management
at a variety of scales, through in-depth analysis, cross-national
and cross-sectoral comparison, theoretical synthesis and conceptual
innovation
- translating analytical research findings into operational recommendations
for policy makers, programme managers and field level practitioners
- disseminating information and stimulate debate on people-centred
and sustainable natural resource management in Southern Africa,
through publications, workshops and electronic networking
- helping strengthen the capacity of actors and agencies in the
region to analyse and act in relation to these issues by hosting
regional training courses on a range of relevant topics
- engaging in policy advocacy through communicating relevant research
findings and recommendations to policy makers in the region and
to other actors who might influence the policy process (eg. NGOs
or emerging social movements
