BSc General Degree:
Statistics Major
A student must satisfy the Faculty regulations for entry into
Part I and, in addition, must have obtained at least a C in
Mathematics, in order to register for any Statistics Part
I course.
The 4 courses at Part I are STS101, 102, 111 and 112.The only
CORE course is STS101 any student wishing to obtain a major
in Statistics MUST pass STS101.
In order to register to Statistics Part II as a major a student
must have passed at least three part 1 courses and satisfied
the pre-requisites for at least 5 part II courses and can
also register for the necessary co-requisites.
A student who has passed less than three part I courses in
Statistics (and may or may not be repeating Part I) can still
register for one or more Part II courses provided he has the
necessary pre-requisites and can register also for the necessary
co-requisites.
In summary a student can fully register for Part II Statistics
provided he has passed STS101, STS112 and one other part 1
course.
(a) If he has failed only STS101 he can repeat it and, as
the same time, register only for STS202, STS203 (not as a
major)
(b) If he has failed only STS112 he can repeat it and, as
the same time, register for STS201, 202, 203, 213, 221 (as
a major but will have to do STS211 the following year)
(a) In all other possible situations a student may be eligible
to register for one or more part II courses provided the pre/co-requisites
are satisfied, but according to Faculty he would not be registered
for Part II statistics.
The core courses at Part II are STS201, 211 and 221.
In order to register for Statistics Part III as a major a
student must have passed at least five part II courses and
satisfied the pre-requisites for a least five part III courses.
A student who has passed less than 5 part II courses in Statistics
(and may or may not be repeating part II) can still register
for some Part III courses provided he has satisfied the pre-requisites
and can also register for the necessary co-requisites.
In summary a student can fully register for Part III Statistics
course provided he has passed STS101, STS102, STS112,STS210,
STS211, STS221, and any other two Part II courses
(a) If he has failed only STS201 he can still register for
all Part III courses provided he repeats 201 at the same time
(as a major)
(b) If he has failed only ST211 he can only registrar for
STS311, 312, 324, 325 and 326 (not as a major)
(c) If he has failed only STS221 he can still register for
all Part III courses except STS311, provided he repeats 221
at the same time (as a major)
(d) In all other possible situations he can register for one
or more Part III courses provided he can satisfy the pre/co-requisites
but according to Faculty he would not be registered for Part
III Statistics.
In addition to the courses in Statistics a student may study
at most 8 course from other Departments/Faculties, provided
they are approved by the Department and do not hinder him
from obtaining a major in Statistics.
To obtain a major in Statistics a student must have
(a) passed each core course for Statistics
(b) passed at least 5 Part III courses in Statistics
(c) passed overall at least 13 courses in Statistics
In summary a student can obtain a major in Statistics provided
he has passed
(a) STS101, 102, 112 (b) STS201, 211,221 (c) STS301, 302
(d) Any other three part III courses
(e) Any other two part II courses
To classify the pass in a Statistics major we take a weighted
average of marks for
(a) STS201, 211, 221 weighted by 2.
(b) The best marks for any other part II courses weighted
by 2
(c) STS301, 302 weighted by 3
(d) The best marks for any other part III courses weighted
by 3
BSc General Degree:
Statistics Minor
A student must satisfy the Faculty regulations for entry into
Part 1 and, in addition, must have obtained at least a C in
Mathematics, in order to register for any Statistics Part
1 course.
The 4 course at Part 1 are STS101, 102, 111 and 112. The only
CORE course is STS101 any student wishing to obtain a minor
in Statistics MUST pass STS101.
In order to register for Statistics Part II as a minor a student
must have passed at least three part 1 courses and satisfied
the pre-requisites for at least 4 part II courses and can
also register for the necessary co-requisites.
A student who has passed less than three part 1 courses in
Statistics (and may or may not be repeating Part 1 can still
register for one or more part II courses provided he has the
necessary pre-requisites and can register also for the necessary
co-requisites
In summary a student can register for a minor at Part II Statistics
provided he has passed STS101 and two other part 1 courses.
(a) If he has failed only STS101 he can repeat it and at the
same time, register only for STS202, STS203 (not as a minor)
(b) If he has failed only STS112 he can register for STS201,
202, 203, 213,221 (as a minor)
There are no core courses at Part II and Part III for a minor.
In addition to the courses in Statistics a student may study
at most 8 courses from other Department/Faculties , provided
they are approved by the Department and do not hinder him
from obtaining a minor in Statistics.
To obtain a minor in Statistics a Student must have
(a) passed STS101
(b) passed at least 5 Part II or higher courses in Statistics
(c) passed overall at least 8 courses in Statistics
Undergraduate Diploma
In Statistics
Applicants should have a pass at Grade C or higher in Mathematics
at Ordinary level in the General Certificate of Education
(or approved equivalent). Applicants should also have a recognised
(post O-level) qualification which includes passes in suitable
foundation courses in probability, inference and applied statistics,
as judged suitable by the Departmental Board.
The programme runs for one year full time or two years part
time. The programme normally commence in August and continue
to the end of the normal academic year in the Faculty of Science.

Formal examination in all
except the project will take place concurrently with undergraduate
examinations at the end of each semester. The first part of
the programme consists of all the taught courses. The second
part of the programme consists of the project. Normally students
are advised to proceed to the second part after successfully
completing the first part. |
