The traditional examples tend to be fractals (FAQ), chaos and graph theory. Fibonacci Numbers are one of those seemingly useless things that just happen to occur everywhere in nature. Ethnomathematics is the study of how mathematics arises naturally in societies. For instance, in games. Mancala is a game that Egyptians used to play thousands of years ago and which you can play now.
